A Facebook group created last year to help find a missing University of Toronto Scarborough student has been taken down.
Twenty-one year-old Abu-Ubaida Atieque is still missing after he was last seen leaving their home in the Neilson Road and Sheppard Avenue area on the morning of Nov. 18, 2008.
“The police are working, everybody is working, and we still have no clue,” says Atieque’s father, Mohammed.
The group on Facebook, “Missing Person – Abu-Ubaida Atieque” was made to inform people of the missing student and information on searches. However, the group is not found on Facebook anymore.
Numerous searches in the neighbourhood have yet to turn up any leads. One search of the valley bordering UTSC involved about 300 people and was organized, in part, by the school’s student union.
Sulaimaan Abdus-Samad, UTSC’s Student Union VP academics remembers Atieque from their elementary school days.
“He was a good student. He always got good grades. He was always a part of the community,” Abdus-Samad said. “I was shocked when I heard.”
The youngest of four children, Atieque was studying electrical engineering at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. However, he was also known to visit the Scarborough campus.
Members of one search said authorities triangulated Atieque’s last cell phone call to East Scarborough. However, this has neither been confirmed or denied by police.
Atieque reportedly suffers from depression and is without his medication.
He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants, brown shoes and is described as 5-foot-7 and 165 lbs.
