Birchmount pummels Sir John A. MacDonald

Jordan Traianidis scored two rushing touchdowns as the Birchmount Park Panther’s took a 36-0 victory over the Sir John A. MacDonald Black Scots in senior football action on Friday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 3-0 while the Black Scots fell to 1-2.

Birchmount got the shutout despite having to deal with heavy rain through 48 minutes.

“We have a veteran team,” said Panthers coach Rob Pacas. “We’ve played in these kind of conditions before and there’s nothing you can do to change the weather, so you’ve got to do what you can.”

Birchmount’s offence was sharp right from the first play. Trevor Harvey ran the ball 30 yards, following a pitch from Ryan Mitchell, then Curtis Carmichael rushed another 20 before Mitchell pushed the ball two yards into the end zone.

That gave  the Panthers a 7-0 lead after the extra point.

Birchmount defensive back Aaron Brown intercepted a pass six minutes into the game, sending the offence back on the field. Harvey ran 10 yards in to score but the play was called back due to a holding penalty.

The Panthers had to settle for a field goal to go up 10-0.

Two minutes into the second quarter, Harvey scampered 22 yards for a major, to make it 17-0 after the extra point.

“We played very well, executed on offence, and hung onto the ball in this weather,” Pacas said.

After the Black Scots went two and out on the next possession, Brown returned a punt 60 yards in for a score, giving Birchmount a 23-0 advantage.

The Black Scots didn’t get a first down until halfway through the second quarter.

Traianidis rushed 25 yards for his first touchdown four minutes into the final quarter, putting the Panthers up 30-0 after the convert.

He scored another touchdown with five minutes to go, making it 36-0.

MacDonald almost broke the shutout with 30 seconds remaining, but they couldn’t move the chains with the ball on the 12 yard line.

Birchmount, city finalists from a year ago, has high hopes for this season.

“The expectation is to get into the playoffs healthy and play good football,” Pacas said. “That’s been the bottom line for the last couple of years. These guys know what it takes to win.”
