Three weeks in, the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and Oshawa Generals are getting a sense of how their season is going to look.
After six games the Majors (4-2) sit in second in the Ontario Hockey League’s Central Division.
The Generals (2-2-2) are not fairing as well, holding down the East Division’s third place.
Mississauga won its last two games, a 3-2 shootout thriller over the Brampton Battalion and a strong 6-2 showing against the Barrie Colts.
Rob Flick scored the game winner against Barrie, a pleasant surprise since the centre is known more for his defensive play then his scoring touch.
“I do have a physical role,” said the native of London, Ont. to the Mississauga News. “But this is my second year in the league now.
“I’m getting more ice time, some power-play time and it’s a chance to put up some numbers.”
Hometown boy Casey Cizikas is leading the Majors with three goals and three assists as he centres the team’s top-line. Fellow draw-man Jordan Mayer leads the team with five markers.
Oshawa has been less consistent then Mississauga.
The Generals won their first game of the season in extra time 5-4 over the Sarnia Sting and then lost the next four.
Their future looked brighter on Sunday when they beat the Ottawa 67s, 5-4 in a shootout.
Captain Jeff Hayes led the Generals against the 67s, adding a goal and an assist, giving him nine points on the season.
Oshawa will be boosted by defenceman Calvin de Haan who returned from the New York Islanders’ training camp Sept. 29.
“We are obviously happy to welcome Calvin back to the Generals,” Oshawa General Manager/Coach Chris DePiero said on the team’s website.
“He’s had an outstanding training camp and pre-season with the New York Islanders and he’s an outstanding person and player.
“The experience he has gained at the NHL level will only serve him well this season.”
De Haan was drafted 12th overall in the NHL’s 2009 Priority Selection by the Islanders.
The Generals will visit the Colts Thursday night, for a 7:30 p.m. game in the Barrie Molson Centre.
Mississauga will host the Peterborough Petes at the Hershey Centre this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
