Malvern play complete game, upend Bloor

Striker Carl Suddick scored twice to lead Malvern’s senior boys soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the Bloor Bears on Wednesday afternoon.

Sam Moody and Henry Moody each added a goal for Malvern (3-1), while Bloor (2-2) managed to break goalie Jesse Stark’s shutout very late in the contest.

“Carl, up to this point, has been showing a lot of potential,” coach John Seely said. “Today it just seemed to all click for him.”

Seely is excited with how his two top forwards — Suddick and Sam Moody — are clicking early in the season.

“[Sam] usually scores most of the goals and Carl compliments him,” Seely said. “Today it just worked perfectly. They play very well together.”

Suddick was happy with the all-around game from Malvern, which dominated offensively and stifled Bloor on defence.

“I feel we played a pretty complete game and got lucky on the ball,” Suddick said. “I got a couple of easy breaks.”

Sam Moody scored the game’s opening goal halfway through the first half, after taking a pass from his own zone and placing the ball in the corner of the net.

Both teams exchanged chances for the rest of the half, including back-to-back free kicks just outside the box for Bloor, but each time a wall of Malvern defenders kept the ball out of harm’s way.

Bloor came out in the second half hungry for an equalizer, but it didn’t take long for those hopes to be dashed when Suddick scored his first of the afternoon, tapping in a ball that was rolling across the goal box.

Moments later came the goal of the game as Henry Moody used some fancy footwork to split two defenders before sending the ball to Suddick, who chipped it into the net.

Moody added another insurance goal midway through the second half before Malvern went into complete shutdown mode defensively for rest of the game.

“I just think we had a few essential positions where we’re a lot stronger in the personnel,” summed up Seely. “That was basically the difference. I think we played a very disciplined game.”

Bloor did manage to get one ball by Stark with minutes remaining in the game.

Despite allowing four goals, Bloor goalkeeper Tyler Cruz made a number of saves to help his team remain in the game, but was still disappointed in the outcome.

“I was alright,” Cruz said. “My defence could have been better, but no complaining. I should have played a lot better and should have stopped two goals, but that’s how it is.”

Following the game, a few Bloor supporters tried to stir things up with some Malvern players before being escorted off the field by the team’s coaching staff.

Around the Region: Lawrence Park toppled Monarch Park 3-0 to remain undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record and sit atop the South Region.
