Fire ignites at Buddhist Meditation Centre for a second time

Flames at a Buddhist temple in Scarborough had to be extinguished by Toronto fire fighters last Friday for the second time in just seven months.

At 2 a.m. on Nov. 27 a fire ignited on the front porch of the Maha Vihara Buddhist Meditation Centre but was put out before it reached the inside of the building.

Multiple bottles of flammable liquid were discovered on the porch leading police to suspect arson was involved.

On May 16 a similar fire erupted at another entrance of the building where bottles of flammable liquid were also found.

A fence had been planned to be built at the predominately Sinhalese temple even before this latest fire.

The suspect attacks on the site have occurred at a time when civil war is happening in Sri Lanka between the Sinhalese and Tamils.
