Skip Cheryl Bernard led Team Canada to a 5-4 victory over Team Switzerland in the first draw of women’s curling at the 2010 Olympics on Tuesday.
With last rock in the tenth end, Bernard was able to draw to the button for the victory.
The Canadians took the lead in the third end as Bernard was able to score one.
Switzerland, through skip Mirjam Ott, would reply quickly, scoring two in the fourth end to take the 2-1 lead. Canada scored two in the sixth to take back the lead and make it 3-2.
A lane violation by Switzerland in the seventh end caused the loss of a rock and opened up an opportunity for Canada to take a larger lead. Ott though would come up with a brilliant shot and score one to tie the game at three.
Bernard scored one in the eighth to go up 4-3 in what was turning into a back and forth game. Ott would score one in the ninth leaving the game tied 4-4.
In other action on day one of the women’s draw: Germany led by skip Andrea Schopp defeated Russia 9-5, Japan defeated the United States 9-7 while Sweden rallied in the last two ends to edge Denmark 6-5.
Team Canada will look to improve to 2-0 when they take on Japan on Wednesday.
