Guay narrowly misses podium in super-G

Erik Guay placed fifth at the men’s super-G race on Friday in Whistler, finishing only 0.03 seconds off the podium.

Obliviously disappointed, Guay told the Montreal Gazette, “it’s tough to swallow.”

“It was within my grasp. It was there today.”

The 28-year-old, who trains at Mont-Trebiant Ski Club in Quebec with coaches Paul Krisofic and Lionel Finance, is a former World Cup winner.

He narrowly missed a medal in the 2006 Turin Olympics where he came in fourth.

“I’m tired with it” Guay said. “There’s something I’ve got to change, something that needs to unblock for me to just let it go and get those victories and podium finishes.”

Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal placed first with a time of 1:30.34 and again the Americans dominated the skiing event by placing second and third.

Bode Miller won the silver medal and Andrew Weibrecht won the bronze medal, proving the American team is a force to be reckoned with.

“I definitely let it go as much as I could today,” Weibrecht told CBC. “Going into the bottom, I really hammered because I knew my mistakes would hold me back a little bit.”

Weather has been a huge problem with the 2010 Winter Games and due to the bad weather many events, like skiing, have been postponed.

The men’s super combined downhill and slalom, as well as the ladies super combined were amongst some of the events postponed, however a few individuals are having a more positive outlook on the delays.

“Everybody has been talking about this since the Games were given to Vancouver,” women’s race director Atle Skaardal told Yahoo Sports. “It’s very unstable conditions here. But that’s part of our business. It’s not the only alpine ski site with weather problems. It was well known about the wet, humid, warm winter weather here. … This is exactly what people have been talking about. We have to live with that.”

Canadian Jan Hudec finished 23rd while Manuel Osborne-Paradis and Robbie Dixon did not finish.
