Police seek two in North York homicide

Toronto police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying two men seen on surveillance tape from a North York homicide, Detective Mike Carbone told a press conference today.

Sometime between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. on Feb. 8, 22-year-old Tyrell Duffus left his apartment and entered the eighth floor stairwell of his building at 20 Falstaff Ave.

He became involved in an altercation with an unknown person or persons in the stairwell. A gun was pulled and Duffus was shot several times, police allege.

At around 10:30 p.m., another resident of the building found the body and contacted police.

Friday, police released a surveillance tape that shows two men exiting the south end of the building at 6:44 p.m. the night Duffus was shot. Duffus was shot in the building’s north stairwell.

Carbone hopes the public will be able to identify the two men, who are persons of interest in this case.

He noted that one of the men in the video was wearing a jacket with three distinctive stripes on the right shoulder.

Carbone said that while the victim was known to police, he was trying to change his ways.

“It appears that he was trying to make some efforts to turn his life around,” Carbone said. “We know he was attending school and we know his partner was expecting a child and he was doing whatever he could to support her and the new baby.”

This was Toronto’s seventh homicide of 2010.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Toronto Homicide Squad at 416-808-7378, or Crimestoppers.
