Shootout win advances Swiss to quarterfinals

Romano Lemm scored the deciding goal to give Switzerland a 3-2 shootout victory over Belarus in the men’s hockey playoff qualifier Tuesday.

Belarus opened the scoring less than one minute into the first period.

Jonas Hiller misplayed a soft dump in by Viktar Kastsiuchonak right onto the stick of Aleksei Kalyuzhny who shovelled in the rebound.

The Swiss got their payback on the power play, when Julien Sprunger put his second of the Olympics past Andrei Mezin.

Edmonton-born Hnat Domenichelli broke the deadlock in the second period, on yet another power play, when he buried his first goal as a Swiss player.

Konstantin Zakharov scored the equalizer late in the second period.

Switzerland’s Hiller made 22 saves while Mezin kept out 40 shots for Belarus.

The Swiss were 2-for-3 on the power play while Belarus was able to capitalize once on five chances.

The win gives Switzerland a berth in the quarterfinals and a date with the top-seeded United States Wednesday afternoon.
