Bernard, Canada beat Russia in final round robin match

Canada finished off the women’s curling round robin in style, defeating Russia 7-3 to move their record to 8-1.

Team Canada skip Cheryl Bernard is playing exceptionally well heading into the semifinals, shooting 93 per cent in the win.  The late-game heroics that Bernard has been known for in these Olympics were not required in this match.

Trailing 2-1 after five ends, Bernard made an open draw to score four after Russian skip Anna Sidorova attempted a takeout with her last shot, but threw through the house.

Russia and Canada exchanged singles in the seventh and eighth ends, and Canada stole a point in the ninth end to take a four point lead.

Canada will face Mirjam Ott of Switzerland in a semifinal game Thursday morning, hoping to advance to the gold medal game on Friday.  Canada defeated Switzerland 5-4 in both teams’ first game of the round robin.

Ott cruised to a 10-3 victory over the United States in the final draw.  Switzerland has now won six straight games heading into the semifinal matchup with Canada.

In other games from the final draw, Anette Norberg of Sweden defeated Germany and Andrea Schopp 8-7, while Moe Meguro of Japan fell 7-5 to Denmark and Madeleine Dupont.
