American’s Bill Demong and Johnny Spillane finished first and second respectively in the men’s individual long hill nordic combined at Whistler Olympic Park on Wednesday.
Austria’s Bernhard Gruber led after the ski jumping portion of the event, but lost time during the 10km cross country ski, finishing in third position.
Poor visibility and strong winds caused the ski jumping to be postponed making it a difficult day for all of the competitors.
Thunder Bay, Ontario’s Jason Myslicki was the only Canadian in the field finishing in a disappointing 44th place.
The victory added to an already impressive run by the U.S. in nordic combined at this years’ Games.
Coming into Wednesday, the Americans had already won two silver medals in the individual normal hill and the team 4×5 km relay events.
Demong was coming into this years’ Games on the heels of a career World Cup season having won the large hill competition at the World Championships and placing first in five other World Cup events.
Germany’s Georg Hettich won gold in the 15km combined event in Turin but could not overcome a poor jump to start the day, finishing in 20th.
