Foggy conditions did not stop Razzoli

After the first run in the men’s slalom, Giuliano Razzoli of Italy is ranked one at Whistler Creekside.

Slovenia’s Mitja Valencic finished in second place and Austrian Benjamin Raich skied into third place.

Weather continued to be a big story as there was concerns that the course would not hold up for the later skiers. The men had to deal with heavy fog conditions that helped send some skiers off course.

The story of the first run was who could finish the race. Out of 102 skiers, 44 did not finish, three were disqualified and one did not even start.

Canada’s alpine team has not won a medal in these Olympics and their last chance as it is the last alpine event.

Michael Janyk was the top Canadian finisher and the medal hope. He had a slow first run and finished in 11th spot.

Trevor White finished in 17th place while Julien Cousineau is in 19th spot. Brad Spence started run one clean but could not hold on and took a spill. He did not finish the race.

Austria’s men have yet to win a medal at these Games and were the heavy favourites going in.

Benjamin Raich, who is trying to defend his 2006 Olympic gold medal. But will need to put in a strong second run. He had a slight slip at the top of the course and finished third.

Marcel Hirscher had a clean run but not fast enough as he wound up in ninth, while Reinfried Herbst is 12th. Manfred Pranger went down and looked like he hurt his back and did not finish the race.

American Bode Miller has had success winning three medals at these Games, one in each event. But he won’t get a medal in slalom as he went off course and did not finish.

The snow leopard otherwise known as Kwame Nkrumah- Acheampong of Ghana finished his race in 53rd place.

Run two is set to go at 1:45 p.m. PST.
