Greece has finally won a match at the World Cup.
Appearing in just their second ever World Cup, Greece has finally found a way to win as they defeated a shorthanded Nigeria 2-1 at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Nigeria was the first to find the board as Kalu Uche booted home a tricky 35 yard free kick in the 16th minute that saw a confused Greek keeper Alexandros Tzorvas throw himself in the opposite direction of the ball.
A turning point of the match came in the 33rd minute when Nigerian midfielder Sani Kaita was shown a red card and ejected from the game for kicking Vassilis Torosidis, forcing the Nigerians to play out the rest of the game one man short.
The Greeks were able to take advantage of Nigeria’s one-man deficit and tied the game in the 44th minute when a Dimitris Salpingidis shot deflected off Lukman Haruna and into the net.
Greece sealed victory in the 71st minute when Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama had trouble controlling the ball, allowing Torosidis to kick home the loose ball for the final lead of the game.
The Greeks still have a lot of work to do if they hope to move on to the second round. Statistically speaking, Greece needs at least a draw against powerhouse Argentina, which may be a daunting task considering Argentina easily disposed of South Korea 4-1, the same South Korean team that defeated Greece 2-0 just a few days ago.
