Ozil becomes German hero after scoring game winner

Germany will face England in the round of 16 after topping their group with a 1-0 win over Ghana on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

German youngster Mesut Ozil, got the winner for his team. Despite Ghana not being able to score, they move on with the German’s to the next round.

Ozil’s goal came in the 60th minute of the game when he took a spectacular strike from just outside the box. It was a beauty, definitely one for the highlight reel. It was the first of the tournament for the 21 year old.

This game had more story plots than one could imagine. Germany looked to bounce back after an unsuspecting loss to Serbia, while Ghana headed into the game first in Group D.

Most dramatically however, family rivals faced- off today as Kevin- Prince Boateng and brother Jerome Boateng were foes on the pitch. Kevin- Prince plays for Ghana and Jerome for Germany.

Kevin- Prince along with the Black Stars did not give Germany a smooth path. They counterattacked effectively providing heart stopping moments.

Their best chance to tie the game came in the 64th minute when Ghanian Asamoah Gyan headed the ball to teammate Andre Ayew who shot the ball that was headed inside the net.

The potential goal was denied by Captain Philipp Lahm of Germany who blocked the shot from the goal line. But Ghana had nothing left as a typical defence from three time World Cup winners went into conservative mode.

Ghana can also exhale a sigh of relief as Serbia lost to Australia 2-1, just enough to put the African team through to the next round. They also become the only African team to move on so far as the Ivory Coast awaits their fate.
