September brought both good and bad fortune to the Toronto Argonauts.

On Wednesday, the CFL announced that Argos defensive end Ronald Flemons and return specialist Chad Owens were named defensive and special teams players of the month, respectively.

The Boatmen pairing were able to achieve the feat despite their team going a dismal 1-3 in September.

Flemons put up big numbers in the four games played, recording 22 tackles, four sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.

In a Week 11 match-up against the B.C. Lions, the five-year man out of Texas A&M managed seven tackles and a career-best three sacks — a performance that earned him defensive player of the week honours.

However, even though he played well in the game, he will probably be best remembered for his embarrassing gaffe with the ball that would have resulted in a sure touchdown, something Flemons is quick to brush off.

“It’s probably no worse than missing a tackle that results in a score,” the Toronto lineman told the Toronto Sun. “It’s just nobody notices that.”

Owens’ September wasn’t too shabby either, and luckily for him, he didn’t flub any sure majors.

The man known as the “Fly’n Hawaiian” totaled 639 kick return yards in the month that added to his league-leading combined yards tally of 2,098, more than 600 ahead of second place Dion Murphy.

Similar to Flemons’ big game against the Lions, the electrifying returner had a sensational performance of his own in the Argos’ lone win against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 12.

Owens was the catalyst to the victory, scoring on an 80-yard punt return in the third quarter. He run was apart of 125-yard punt return effort in the game.

The other award winners include Saskatchewan’s pair of Darian Durant, who was named offensive player of the month, and Andy Fantuz, named Canadian player of the month.
