Controversial Kennedy regains trustee position

Despite being ousted from her Toronto Catholic District School Board trustee position after a judge’s finding of conflict of interest and the board’s budget scandal, Angela Kennedy has been returned to the TCDSB.

With 225 polling stations tabulated Kennedy has 47 per cent of the votes cast among four candidates. Throughout the campaign, Kennedy stressed that she would implement policies ensuring that employee spending is monitored, and that she would maintain budget transparency.

Kevin Morrison follows with 33 per cent of the votes. His campaign to have increased transparency and put more money into the Arrowsmith program for special needs children failed to stall Kennedy’s momentum.

Meanwhile, the public school board incumbents are still ahead in the polls by comfortable margins.

Ward 13/Don Valley West has held steady, as Gerri Gershon leads with 69 per cent of the votes, while Muhammad Shahid trails at 30 per cent. Gershon campaigned on making global citizens of Toronto schoolchildren, and helping TDSB teachers learn how to use new technologies.

Cathy Dandy still leads in Ward 15/Toronto-Danforth with 75 per cent of the votes, with only three stations left to count.

Environmental initiatives are important in East York, as both Dandy and Sheila Cary-Meagher have taken leads with campaigns stressing the importance of a greener future.

Cary-Meagher leads in the polls in Ward 16/Beaches East York, with 69 per cent of the votes and only three polling stations untallied. She has campaigned to conserve green-space and use under-utilized schools as spaces for other government-funded initiatives, such as daycares. Matthew Kennedy, with 23 per cent of the votes, and Alan Burke, who has 17 per cent, follow Cary-Meagher.
