Two dead, one critical after Scarborough house fire

A midday house fire in the east end of Toronto on Oct. 30 has left two people dead and one in serious condition.

Ying Tang, 20, and another woman yet to be identified died in the fire. Yuanjie Guan, 22, is in critical condition suffering from severe burns.

Tang and Guan were renting rooms in the home on Kimbermount Drive in the Kennedy Road and Finch Avenue area.

Police say they were visa students from China. Guan arrived in Canada in 2007, while Tang migrated last year. Tang was studying at Centennial College and Guan is a former student at the school.

Det. Eric Goldsmith of 42 Division says the house belongs to Tang’s aunt. Although she was able to identify Tang and Guan, Tang’s aunt does not know the identity of the third victim, he said.

Goldsmith said Guan will undergo several surgeries. He suffered severe burns to over 60 per cent of his body and is currently in a medically induced coma at Sunnybrook Hospital.

Investigators have not yet determined the source of the fire, Goldsmith said.

Toronto Fire Captain Mike Strapko reported damage to the home is estimated at $400,000.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 416-808-4202 or 416-808-4204.
