Scarborough East invites community to talk about jobs

Residents of Scarborough East are invited to come out to its very first Community Speaks event of the year: Let’s talk about jobs.

The event is to take place on Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ontario Early Years Centre located at 4218 Lawrence Ave. E., Unit 15.

The City of Toronto and the United Way have designated a priority community in the Scarborough East neighbourhood; Our Kingston-Galloway and Orton Park community. Since then, the community has banned together as a family and a place of helping hands.

“We have been doing Community Speaks from day one of the Storefront,” said Dip Habib,  coordinator of the volunteer department for the East Scarborough Storefront. “It’s a way of getting community members to get the community involved in community wide topics,”

Eight times a year, community members in the Kingston-Galloway and Orton Park community gather for fun activities, food, and discussion of topics relevant to the community. Recommendations are made to guide community-building activities throughout the year.

The Scarborough East community has come up with a “Let’s talk about jobs” event for individuals of all ages and diverse backgrounds, whether they are unemployed and seeking job opportunities, unsatisfied with current work positions or simply looking to discuss and share ideas with others.

“Jobs are always an important thing and Storefront has become qualified as one of the hubs where people can go,” Habib said. “So it’s a way of getting people to come to our services; to get involved with the community, to see what job trainings are happening, and to attend our job fairs. It’s all about the community members’ interests,”

The event also promises door prizes and free lunch along with essential career tips needed for any field of employment.
