More charges for daycare worker

Police have laid additional child sex charges against an East York daycare worker, and they say there may be more victims still to come forward.

Following a Feb. 18 court date on the original charges against him, the suspect was also charged with sexual exploitation, sexual interference and sexual assault.

All the charges stem from a 2004 sexual assault investigation regarding two young girls at the Selwyn Community Child Care Centre, in the St. Clair Avenue-O’Connor Drive area, at 1 Selwyn Ave. adjacent to Selwyn Elementary School. The accused was an employee at the non-profit, licensed daycare centre at the time of the alleged offences.

He was initially charged in January, while he was working as an early childhood educator at another school-neighbouring daycare centre, Jackman Community Day Care, at 79 Jackman Ave. near Broadview and Danforth avenues. It’s housed at Jackman Avenue Junior Public School, and is also non-profit and licensed. There are no allegations involving children there.

But police at 54 Division say there may be other victims, and are asking anyone with information to contact the Toronto Police Service Youth Services Division at 416-808-5405.

Charged is James Mallais, 38, of Toronto.
