Incumbents lead in East York

It’s a good night so far for the incumbent MPPs in East York.

In Don Valley West, the predicted close race between incumbent Liberal transportation minister Kathleen Wynne and her Conservative challenger has failed to materialize: Wynne is leading comfortably with 14,734 votes, totaling just over 58.6 per cent of the balloting. With 7,249 of the votes equaling 28.8 per cent, Conservative Andrea Mandel-Campbell is trailing badly. Local broadcast media have already projected Wynne as winner. In third place is NDP candidate Khalid Ahmed with 2,509 votes, equaling 10 per cent. At this time, 149 of 214 polls have reported.

Local media are also projecting another win for the NDP’s Michael Prue, who has served as MPP in Beaches-East York since 2001.

With 23 of 190 polls reporting, Prue is currently sitting at 1,325 votes, or 46.9 per cent of the total, while Liberal candidate Helen Burstyn is second with 1,038 votes, or 36.7 per cent of the total. Trailing in third, with 383 votes or 13.6 per cent, is Conservative candidate Chris Menary.

The only East York race that local media haven’t called yet is in Toronto-Danforth, where incumbent New Democrat Peter Tabuns of the NDP in the lead with 305 votes or 53.1 per cent of the total. Liberal candidate Marisa Sterling is trailing with 193 votes or 33.6 per cent, and in third is Rita Jethi of the Conservatives with 43 votes or 7.5 per cent of the total. Green Party candidate Tim Whalley is in fourth with 25 votes or 4.4 per cent of the total. Only five of the 196 polls have officially reported.
