Varsity Blues trampled by Ottawa Gee-Gees

University of Toronto's playoff hopes take blow in bitter disappointment

Senior running back Brenden Gillanders scored three touchdowns while guiding the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 34-6 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon at a chilly Varsity Stadium in week 6 OUA action.

Gee-Gees (1-5) quarterback Aaron Colbon went 13-for-26 and 198 yards passing, while Ottawa kicker and active CIS scoring leader Matt Falvo added four field goals.

Toronto (2-4) split the snaps between quarterbacks Simon Nassar and usual starter Richard Quittenton, who came in for the second half despite nursing a shoulder injury that he sustained two games ago.

The two combined for 108 yards passing on the day.

Varsity will need to win both its remaining games (York and Queen’s, the latter in what would be a big upset) and get help to make the post-season.

Gillanders opened the scoring 8:39 into the first quarter when his four-yard run off right tackle pierced the goal line.

Falvo padded the lead 5:19 into the second, and then Gillanders got his second major two-and-a-half minutes before halftime.

His sweep to the left, again from four yards out, put Ottawa up 18-0.

The Blues pulled six points back with two field goals in five seconds after Colbon fumbled a snap directly after kicker Andrew Lomasney hit from 29 yards to put Toronto on the board.

Lomasney’s second kick of the half was from 40, cutting the Gee-Gees lead at the break.

Falvo connected on his second field goal of the game just over a minute into the third period, this time from 46.

Five minutes later, the Ottawa running back got his third touchdown of the game running behind the right guard out of the wildcat to put the game away.

The Gee-Gees’s senior kicker, who entered the game eighth all-time in CIS scoring, added two more field goals in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Notes: Attendance was 1,251 … the defeat keeps the Varsity Blues outside of the playoff picture with two games remaining in the season
