Swapping clothes… and supporting the environment

Browsers at the fall clothing swap to benefit Evergreen Brick Works programs.

A clothing swap benefitting the Evergreen Brick Works on Bayview Avenue took place Sept. 21, and men, women and children took to the shelves perusing the goods offered.

Claire Lipson, the event’s organizer, modeled the event after other swaps in the city that solicit donations in addition to exchanging clothes.

Lipson wanted the event to go beyond a simple clothing swap, and find a way to support a community landmark.

“We wanted to do some fundraising, so there’s an admission fee,” Lipson said.

Donations go toward Evergreen Brick Works initiatives including tree planting, group programming and community sustainability.

Leftover clothing was donated to the Oasis Addiction Recovery Centre and the Diabetes Association of Canada.

Attracting approximately 100 people, the event has taken place twice in the past year and Lipson hopes it will continue.

“We’re sort of in the pilot phase, so we’ll see how that goes,” she said.

Her dream is to hold the event monthly, so it can benefit the community more often.
