Scarborough Art Guild holds 50th annual fall show

In 1970, Joy MacFadyen raised her hand at an Art Guild of Scarborough meeting.

“I suggested we have a fancy dress ball,” she said. “They asked if I would organize it. So of course I got stuck with that job.”

In the 42 years since, MacFadyen has served in virtually every role at the guild.

“I got to be an exhibition chairman, secretary, vice president and the president for four different terms,” she said.

The Art Guild of Scarborough celebrated the 50th anniversary of its fall show on Nov. 3-4. The event included over 250 works of art, produced by the 175 guild members.

The guild meets at Cedarbrook Community Centre weekly from September to June. Meetings include demonstrations from professional artists and workshops.

“We like to expose the members to as many different styles and media that we can,” MacFadyen said. “We learn from them each week.”

MacFadyen retired from official guild duties last May. But she attended the show as a volunteer.

The Art Guild of Scarborough is a popular group, even supporting a wait list of potential members.

“The arts community in Scarborough is quite vibrant,” Margaret Jamieson, member of the guild, said.

Hal Bilz won the juror’s choice award for his painting “Rouge Fractured.” Bilz typically paints from photographs and is often inspired by Scarborough’s rivers and forests.

“There is a beautiful big bend down there (in the Rouge River) and when the ice starts to break up you get some really amazing patterns,” he said. “I spend a lot of time in and around that area because you can pretty well come up with anything down there.”

Guild president Garry Herridge said 47 pieces of art were sold over the weekend and that the show was a success.

“We are a fixture in the community,” he said. “The public returns year after year.”

  1. Thanks for Scott sharing his lovely true story about Art Guild of Scarborough. As a relatively new member, I really appreciate the work have been done by our Board of Directors and other members. Attending SAG’s activities has become a big thing in my life. Especially, when I accepted the “BEST OIL PAINTING” certificate in this passed fall show, I was so happy and felt like I had won a big lottery or even better. Art Guild of Scarborough is like a big family. Here we take care each other and make progress together. Art Guild of Scarborough has established a reputation.
