Peace on earth and good will toward men — and kids! Toronto police are hosting their 18th annual toy drive. They’re asking for donations of new, unused toys to “help…give a child a Christmas,” the promotional poster says.

The toys will be distributed on Dec. 8 to chosen areas in Toronto. The gifts are normally distributed to children staying at community shelters and women’s shelters, but this year, 43 Division in Scarborough will be bringing toys to children at 4205 Lawrence Ave. E., near Morningside Avenue.

“This year, because of the Danzig shooting, that’s our area where we’re targeting to give the toys,” said Constable Guy Service at 43 Division. “There are a lot of kids in that neighbourhood, so we thought ‘let’s help them out this year’, and the community is all for us on that one.”

As crime prevention officer, Service visited the neighbourhood and hopes the kids will recognize him.

The toy drive is enjoyable not only for the children, but for the officers who volunteer to distribute the gifts as well. “It’s great seeing the kids,” said auxiliary liaison officer Rangi Puri. “Some of these kids, if it weren’t for us, wouldn’t be getting any toys. It’s kind of nice seeing their happy faces.”

Toronto police are also working with other organizations and companies such as Walmart and Canadian Tire. On Nov. 10, Toronto police and Walmart are hosting an event at Cedarbrae Mall where toys and donations will be accepted. “Walmart has offered to match any money that we bring in tomorrow, they will double it,” said Service.

If you would like to make a donation toward the Toronto police toy drive, the following locations are accepting new, unused toys or cheques:

  • Toronto police 41 Division at 2222 Eglinton Ave. E.
  • Toronto police 42 Division at 242 Milner Ave.
  • Toronto police 43 Division at 4331 Lawrence Ave. E.
  • Scarborough Town Centre at the security office at 300   Borough Dr.
