Transit riders will have to dig deeper in 2013

Toronto Transit Commission riders can expect another fare increase in the new-year.

TTC fares will increase Jan 1. The price of a token increases from $2.60 to $2.65, and a monthly Metropass will go up $2.50 to $128.50. A weekly pass raises $1.00 to $38.50. Cash fares will remain at $3.00.

Jessica Martin, a TTC communications advisor, says that as ridership grows, so do operating costs.

“With ridership expected to grow to a record 528 million riders in 2013, a fare increase is needed to meet the demand, without cutting service,” said Martin.

The fare increase is in line with the rate of inflation, but will see all cash fares and children’s fares frozen next year.

The TTC’s 2013 Operating Budget is $1.54 billion.

Transit Toronto is a fan-run Internet resource covering the history of public transportation in the Greater Toronto Area.

James Bow, chief content editor, says the TTC has to work with the same world as the rest of us, and prices go up for them as they do with us.

“Oil prices have increased, goods prices have increased, wages have increased, and so on. So, even if the TTC makes absolutely no changes between 2012 and 2013, their costs increase,” said Bow.
