‘Tis the season for hearts and flowers

Valentine’s Day is almost here and flower shops, bakeries and restaurants are getting ready with special deals and romantic opportunities for lovers to share together.

Anthi Floral Boutique, a flower shop located at 824 Pape Avenue, is getting ready for Feb. 14 with style. From the outside, attention is drawn right to the front window, filled with red flowers and red ornaments.

“For Valentine’s Day, the most popular flowers are roses, especially red roses,” said Helen Piliotis, an assistant who works in the store.

She confirmed that the flower business spikes around Valentine’s Day, as lovers buy those special gifts.

“This year, it’s going to be on a Thursday and it’s going to be busy because it’s closer to the weekend,” Piliotis said. “It tends to get busier depending on the day Valentine’s falls on.”

The owner of the Anthi, Mary Papadakis, likes to customize the store’s flower creations in different ways every year.

“Here we like to customize our things, so last year we had tall vases — and instead of putting all roses, we used exotic flowers, different materials. We made the reds and the whites, we used crystals, and not a lot of flowers, but more of that look and we sold them all,” Piliotis said. “So sometimes it’s just a matter of how you present it. We change it up every year.”
