Arrests made in Regent Park shooting

Toronto Police have made two arrests following the Wednesday shooting in Regent Park, that left one man in serious but non life-threatening condition.

Police have charged Melissa Rowe, 21, and Bento Sebastian, 23, both of Toronto, with numerous charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm to endanger human life. They are both scheduled to appear in court later Thursday.

In a news release, police say the two accused were arrested at approximately 4 a.m. Thursday, after police executed a search warrant at a home in the Adelaide Street East and Parliament Street area. This is approximately 1.8 kilometres from the victim’s home, a six minute drive from the 220 Oak Street apartment building where the 45-year old victim was shot.

“The victim’s condition is listed as serious but not life threatening, he is expected to make a full recovery,” said Constable Victor Kwong during a telephone interview.

The Oak Street building belongs to Toronto Community Housing, and has had a history of gun and gang-related violence in the past. The building stands 27 stories tall and stands on the south east corner of River and Gerrard streets. The building was built over 40 years ago. CP24 reports that the man was shot on the second floor of the building. Police say the Toronto Community Housing staff along with security cameras and social media helped with the investigation.
