Owners defend Scarborough store

Published on

Owners of the Rashi Silks House at 2649 Eglinton Ave. E. in Scarborough fought off two armed 17-year-olds attempting to rob them Tuesday afternoon. Neither of the accused can be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police say two adolescents walked into the store armed with a handgun.

The owner, Jeyanthini Kanapanathan, managed to wrestle the gun away from one adolescent and a shot was fired. Two young men fled the scene and were arrested a short distance away. The incident was caught on tape.

Kanapanathan did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

The two youths are facing a total of 11 charges.
