Scarborough councillors weigh in on term limit discussion

When it comes to term limits, Scarborough councillors don’t agree.

“I’ve always supported term limits,” said Mike Del Grande (Scarborough-Agincourt) in a Skype interview. “I think the benefits are you don’t become entrenched.”

Michelle Berardinetti (Scarborough Southwest) believes it’s up to the voters to decide.

“If a councillor is well-liked by residents in their constituency and is providing exemplary service, constituents may wish to continue to have them represent them,” Berardinetti said. “It would seem less than democratic to deprive them of this choice.”

Councillors are thinking about term limits after a recent motion by Mary-Margaret McMahon (Beaches-East York). McMahon asked for a study to explore whether term limits would make Toronto City Council more reflective of the demographics, ideas and talents of Toronto.

The discussion of the study was deferred at last month’s executive committee meeting on March 20.

But the debate won’t go away that easy, as it is to appear again on the executive committee’s agenda later this month.
