Decked out in Toronto Blue Jays gear and with big smiles on their faces, young baseball players from across Scarborough took advantage of a free Rookie Ball clinic at Out of the Park Sports on April 14. The instructional clinic was hosted by the Scarborough Stingers.
Rookie Ball is a level of baseball for kids nine and younger. Batters face a pitching machine rather than an actual pitcher.
Frank Gallo, head coach of the Stingers Minor Peewee AAA team, led the kids through baseball fundamentals. Current players and coaches also pitched in with some help.
Participants were able to learn about and practise fielding, hitting and running in the new indoor facility.
Although the organization has held clinics in the past, this is the first one done strictly for kids age seven to nine.
“They are all young guys and they are ecstatic,” Gallo said. “We want to show off this big place. This is the first one we have actually done with just all Rookie Ball. I expect more kids will come out next week.”
Out of the Park Sports
Another clinic is planned for April 21.
It will be held at Out of the Park Sports at 1 p.m. and last an hour.
A third clinic is also planned for May, once the weather improves.
