Hosting a Super Bowl party? Feeding guests means lots of prep

'It will take four-plus hours, minimum,' sous chef says

Fox sous chef Fraser Kennedy, left, and Matt Simons, the bar's general manager, are ready to host some of the 100 million people expected to watch the Super Bowl at a sports bar or at home on Feb. 2.

The Super Bowl — the biggest sporting event in North America — is set to take place in just a few days.

The big game is projected to break the television viewership record with more than 100 million people expected to watch at a sports bar or at home on Feb. 2.

Super Bowl staples

Any traditional Super Bowl party should include the following food items to cater to all crowds:

  • Pizza
  • Wings
  • Beer
  • Chili
  • Nachos

And just like the players in the big game, getting ready to host a Super Bowl party at home means a lot of hard work, says Frasier Kennedy, sous chef at The Fox at 35 Bay St.

“You need at least three to four hours of hard prep time to get everything in order,” he said. “It will take four-plus hours, minimum. And that’s if you are doing just wings and chili.”

Wings and chili are two of the three key staples every Super Bowl party menu should feature, Kennedy said.

“People who go to any Super Bowl party mostly want it to be simple and they want to know what they are eating,” he said.

For those not up to doing the hours of prep themselves, a sports bar may be the way to go.

The most important thing when looking for a Super Bowl party is the venue, said Matt Simons, general manager of The Fox.

During the game, The Fox will have a television facing every corner of a customer’s table so no one misses a moment of the action, he said.

“We will be giving away Super Bowl shirts throughout the night,” Simons said. “That way we can get a little marketing for The Fox and you will have a memory to go away with.

“We will also have noise makers given away, so that whenever a team scores, the place can go crazy and have fun.”
