Toronto city council’s executive committee is proposing changing the name of Union Station.
Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong moved it should be renamed Sir. John A. MacDonald Station, after Canada’s first Prime Minister.
There is no greater Canadian than our founding father and first Prime Minister. As the bicentennial of his birth approaches, the City of Toronto has a unique opportunity to recognize his contribution to our country.
In Minnan-Wong’s letter to city council he says MacDonald’s numerous contributions included envisioning the unity of Canada and creating the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Minna-Wong further stated the timing of a possible renaming of Union Station, to the first Prime Minister couldn’t be better.
“There is no greater Canadian than our founding father and first Prime Minister. As the bicentennial of his birth approaches, the City of Toronto has a unique opportunity to recognize his contribution to our country.”
The recommendation includes consulting with Toronto Friends of Sir John A. MacDonald in the preparation of a report and seeking public input from appropriate groups and individuals.
A union station is the term used for a railway station where tracks and facilities are shared by two or more separate railway companies.
