This winter has been the coldest in Toronto since 2009, according to the City of Toronto’s website.
Statistics from the website show that between Dec. 16, 2013 and Feb. 16, 2014, city officials issued 26 extreme cold weather alerts. According to the website, 27 alerts were issued for the entire winter of 2008–2009.
The city issues cold weather alerts “to make vulnerable people aware of forecasted weather emergencies,” according to the website.
Issuing the alerts in Toronto is a shared responsibility between the director of Hostel Services and the manager of the Streets to Homes program,” sys Patricia Anderson, manager of the city’s Shelter, Support and Housing Administration.
