Marc-Antoine Pion to add Canadian flavour to Harvard Lacrosse

Quebec native to enroll at famed University in 2015

BRADENTON, Fla. – Harvard University will have a little Canadian flavour joining its Lacrosse program.

Marc-Antoine Pion, the first player from Quebec to come out of the EDGE Lacrosse club and one of Canada’s top young defenceman, has committed to the Crimson for 2015.

Representing such a storied institution is not lost on the Montreal native.

“It means a lot to me, to represent such a great institution and such a historical program,” Pion said. “They set the bar high for the Lacrosse program and have such high academic standards.”

In the mind of Pion, committing to the Ivy League school is the best of both worlds.

“Harvard is where I can find the best compromise between Lacrosse and academics, gaining a better education through a passion.”

On the field, the five-foot-11, 175-pound defenceman is looking forward to proving Harvard Lacrosse is on the rise.

“Their main goal is winning a national championship and that’s what they’re focused on,” Pion said. “As the years go on and the program develops, it will be a superpower in Lacrosse.”

Contemplating majoring in economics, Pion gives much of the credit to the famed IMG Academy for both athletic and academic development.

“I think IMG is a very complete program, not only for Lacrosse but also academically. Athletically I think being at IMG Academy really helps us develop to our full potential,” Pion said. “The amount of time we play and develop I don’t think you can find that at any other school.”

A specific area that IMG Academy has helped Pion with is field vision and video work.

“The aspect that I think I need improvement is simple field awareness,” Pion said “We do a lot of video work as a team and individually. That’s a very big aspect of IMG, not only on the field but other sides of development, including personal interactions with coaches.”

Pion won’t be the lone Canuck playing for Harvard, a distinction he’s looking forward to sharing with Ontario’s Spencer Daniel.

“What’s interesting is for the 2015 class there’s also another Canadian defenceman that committed to Harvard,” said Pion. “I played with him at the All-Canada games two years ago. We know each other and he goes to prep school in the U.S. as well. That will be a good experience for me. Hopefully develop some Canadian chemistry.”
