Police prevent man escaping from sixth-floor window

Called to apartment to break up alleged assault

A 28-year-old man was captured by police officers while attempting to flee from a sixth-floor window after allegedly assaulting a woman, police said.

Police responded to an emergency call for an assault at 14 Gulliver Road on March 10, where a man was reportedly trying to force his way into a woman’s apartment, contrary to a court order.

The man entered the apartment and began to violently assault her, trying to choke her while using a cleaver, police said.

The woman screamed for help and officers showed up, police said. When she was able to break free of the man and open the door, officers confronted the man who then allegedly attempted to escape by jumping from the sixth-floor window, but officers were able to grab him by his ankles preventing him from falling.

As he tried to escape, Maracle continued to disrobe in a 10-minute intense struggle with the police before they were able to apprehend him with no injuries, police said.

Gordon Maracle faces five charges including assault with a weapon and threatening death. He is expected to appear in court on March 12.
