Six-alarm blaze in west-end mattress factory

120 firefighters fighting fire near Dufferin and And Egliinton

The Foamco mattress factory blaze near Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue West shows no sign of dying after four hours.

Firefighters first responded to the call at 8:30 a.m. at the Foamco mattress factory at 198 Fairbank Ave. The fire has rapidly escalated from a two-alarm fire to a six-alarm.

By 12:30 p.m. 30 firetrucks and 120 firefighters are still trying to control the fire.

Thick black smoke hangs in the air in the nighbrouhood around the site. The cloud is visible from more than 10 kilometres from the scene.

Police told nearby Fieldstone Day School to “close the windows and not have the children out” due to smoke, says school head Jonathan Harris.

The black clouds of smoke are visible from nearly 11 kilometres of the scene.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as firefighters can’t go inside the building due to structures collapsing including the roof.

Fire department media representative Mike Strapko said  “everybody got out” without injury in an evacuation of the factory early this  morning and buses came to shelter all individuals.
