Raptor Jonas Valanciunas charged with drunk driving

Toronto player caught with open beer bottles in his car

Toronto centre Jonas Valanciunas was charged with drinking under the influence early Monday morning in Wasaga Beach.

Police were called after a vehicle was spotted going through a drive-through with open beer bottles inside. After investigating police found Valanciunas to be driving the vehicle under the influence.

In a statement released through the team, Valanciunas expressed remorse over the incident.

“I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously,” Valanciunas said. “I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them.”

The league has suspended offenders of driving under the influence in the past. Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd was suspended for two games early in the season for drinking and driving.

The Raptors start their first playoff series April 19 or 20 depending on where they stand at the end of the season.

The second-year, Lithuanian-born player is averaging 11 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season.
