Ottawa man thought to have set self on fire, being treated at Sunnybrook

An Ottawa man has been airlifted to the Ross Tilley Burn Centre at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences after apparently setting himself on fire in an Ottawa parking lot.

The man lit himself on fire at the Rideau Carleton Raceway late Monday afternoon, Ottawa police said. Bystanders reportedly tried to roll the man on the ground as he became engulfed in flames, but firefighters eventually had to put it out with water.

The man, whose name has not been released, suffered second and third degree burns to over 90 percent of his body, police said. He is currently listed in critical condition.

The Ross Tilley Burn Centre handles most of Ontario’s burn-related injuries, with 12 beds monitored around the clock. Thirty per cent of its patients come from the Greater Toronto area, while the remaining 70 per cent come from around the province.
