Chow boasts new endorsements

Four councillors and three candidates announce support

Four sitting councillors and three candidates announced their support for Olivia Chow Tuesday in a media event.

The councillors, all hailing from Toronto’s west end, include Sarah Doucette (Ward 14, Parkdale-High Park), Mike Layton (Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina), Joe Mihevc (Ward 21, St. Paul’s), and Gord Perks (Ward 14, Parkdale-High Park).

Councillor Mike Layton, son of the late Jack Layton, told the media his endorsement of Chow had nothing to do with the fact she was married to his father.

“It’s because I’ve seen what Rob Ford’s policies did, and don’t want four more years of them. Not from Doug Ford, and not from John Tory,” Layton said in a press release from the Chow campaign.

All four councillors are historical NDP supporters. Mihevc received an endorsement from the NDP while previously serving as deputy mayor of York. Doucette has previously endorsed NDP candidates, and Perks ran federally as an NDP candidate.

Municipal election candidates who endorsed Chow today include Joe Cressy (Ward 20, Trinity-Spadina), Ausma Malik (Wards 19/20, TDSB Ward 9), and Marit Stiles (Wards 17/18, TDSB Ward 10).
