In a press conference in Buffalo yesterday, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo called the storm historic and predicted that the snowfall will “break all sorts of records in Buffalo.”
They were pelted with 166 centimetres of snow over a 24 hour span, or five-and-a-half feet of snow in a single day. To compare, have a look at the average monthly snowfall in the winter months in Toronto from 1981 to 2010.

A few things to note, first and foremost, November’s average monthly snowfall in Toronto is 7.5 centimetres. Buffalo had 22 times that much snowfall in a single day.
Toronto’s worst single-day snowfall in November from 1981-2010 was 26.7 centimetres. Again, that’s still one-sixth of what fell in Buffalo.
For Toronto, if the averages mean anything, with five centimetres already having fallen and nearing the end of the month, the city should be able to sleep easily knowing Buffalo’s weather is an isolated incident.
