Greenland Public School kids kick off toy drive for police

Toys are given for donation to public charities during holidays

On Nov. 25, students from Erin Silver’s grade 2 and 3 class at Greenland Public School visited the Toronto Police Headquarters to construct a toy box for the annual toy drive. The kids dipped their hands into paint and got messy to decorate the donation box. Now, a colourful box sits in the lobby at police headquarters.

“The kids were invited to the headquarters to construct the toy box,” Principal Nancy Nikorak said. “They spent the day painting and having fun, and had lunch with a few of the police officers.”

Const. David Hopkinson was one of the officers who took part in the event. He said the Police are affiliated with many proactive charities committed to helping out the community during the holidays. The toy drive ensures that all donations go to a family or a child in need this holiday season.

“Once the toys are collected, they are given to proactive charities,” Hopkinson said. “We ask that a new toy wrapped in the box be given when making your donation.”

The toy drive is now underway and will run until Dec. 10. The goal is to fill the donation box to the top.

“We are collecting toys at our school, so if anyone wants to drop toys off, they are more than welcome,” Nikorak said.

The Police are accepting toy donations until Dec. 10. Anybody who wishes to contribute to the toy drive can drop their donations off at 40 College St. into the box in the main lobby.
