Removal of Bay-Bloor scramble proposed

A city committee is recommending the city spend $26,000 to remove the pedestrian scramble at Bay and Bloor streets, which councillors are split on.

“I think it was a good experiment,” said councillor Stephen Holyday who supports removing the scramble. “It was well-intentioned.”

Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon is opposed.

“It sends a terrible message,” she said. “We’re trying to build a walk-able, livable city and we are ripping out a pedestrian crossing.”

City council will decide this month whether or not to continue using the scramble.

The scramble was introduced in 2010.
