Tiah Sanborn and Josephine Gulston have the same hope for after college

University of South Florida teammates want to become physical therapists

Tampa, Fla., – University of South Florida sprinter Tiah Sanborn runs to complete the hand-off with teammate Josephine Gulston during the women’s 4×100-metre relay.

Tampa, Fla., – Teammates Tiah Sanborn and Josephine Gulston share a common goal both on and off the field.

Sanborn, a sophomore at the University of South Florida, and Gulston, also a sophomore, have the same plan for after college ends.

That plan is to go to physical therapy school.

“I am going to go to PT school,” said Gulston, standing in the shade by the USF track.

“Me too, yeah I want to be a physical therapist too,” said Sanborn.

Both women chose to go to USF because of its location, it was close to home. Gulston is from Coconut Creek, Fla., while Sanborn is from Lake Worth.

“Well it is kind of close, closer to my house and they were offering me a scholarship,” said Gulston.

“For me, yeah, it was close to home,” said Sanborn.

On the field, the women compete together as members of the 4×100-metre relay race with Sanborn taking the third hand-off and passing the baton to Gulston the anchor.

However, neither finds the relay to be their favourite event.

“My favourite event is the 400 metres,” said Gulston.

When Sanborn got to college, she had to give up her preferred event, the high jump.

In high school, she competed in both sprint and jump events, but once in college, Sanborn had to give up certain events. This included the high jump and triple jump, but she still competes in long jump, pole vault, 200 metres, 400 metres, and both relays, 4×100-metre and 4×400-metre.

“My favourite event was high jump,” said Sanborn. “But I don’t do get to do that here.”

Instead, similar to her teammate, Sanborn has turned her focus to the 400 metres and set a college best record for the distance earlier in 2015. However, at the USF Invitational on Friday, her best result was as part of the relay team with Gulston.

They took second place in the 4×100-metre relay with a time of 47.10. Despite the great result, the women were already coming up with ways to improve their performance.

“It felt good, we need to work on our hand-offs though,” said Gulston.

“There is always room for improvement,” added Sanborn. “But the running was really good today.”
