Paige Miller grabbed the gold medal in the 50 metre backstroke on Thursday at the national swim trials in Toronto.

The Texas A&M senior used the victory to gain confidence in a shot at the Olympics in 2016.

¨I just came back from competing in Texas, so I was not expecting to go this fast, however I graduate from Texas A & M in May and then I will come back and train in Toronto for the Rio 2016 trials,¨ said Miller. ¨I feel like I owe it to myself .”

Miller was the 2014 NCAA champion in the 100-yard backstroke, and she had to beat out two other national champions in fellow seniors Cammile Adams and Breeja Larson for the honor.

“The NCAA last year was my main focus and now I have to transfer a long course which is really hard but I am working on it¨,” said Miller

The 24-year-old is also one of the many swimmers filled with praise for the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre facility.

¨I love the pool and the whole facility and it is nice that the warm-up pool is separate so you can focus in the competition, it really helps that is really bright in comparison to most pools we swim in and that helps you stay alert.”
