1,100 residents in Scarborough lose power overnight

Hydro restores connection to most before 8 am.

A neighbourhood in Scarborough was without power Wednesday morning after a suspected impaired driver crashed a vehicle into a pole and damaged the area’s electrical wires.

Police were called to the scene of the accident at Warden Avenue, just south of Ellesmere, after a car struck a pole at around 3 a.m.

Toronto Hydro reported that power was restored to most of the 1,100 residents affected by 8 a.m. The remaining 53 homes were reconnected by 9:30 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pole sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Toronto Police say they have taken the driver, a man in his 30s, into custody.

Police also say that no charges have been laid at this time and the investigation is still ongoing.
