City to collaborate with Indian film industry

Mayor signs agreement with Indian business groups

Mayor John Tory is trying to stimulate Toronto’s economy through its film industry — and India’s.

Tory signed an agreement with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday. The pact will aim to advance both Toronto and India’s respective film industries. The mayor announced the news on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

According to Tory, the move will “stimulate economic trade and investment in both countries.” It also makes Toronto the first municipality to make good on a 2014 audio-visual co-production treaty between the Indian and Canadian governments.

While the agreement’s chief purpose is to establish new business relationships, both parties have agreed to assist each other with festivals, summits, seminars and other events.

The pact was signed by Tory and the Consul General of India Akhilesh Mishra.
