Anonymous posts raise safety concerns on campus

U of T students alerted about suspicious activities after threats made on blogs

U of T’s vice president sent out an alert to all students regarding anonymous threats made against the school on a public blog.

Students should be vigilant about suspicious activities on the university campus due to the threatening online comments, Cheryl Regehr said in an email to students, faculty and staff.

According to a Reddit forum used by U of T students, the threats comes from a user named “Kill Feminists,” who posts comments on several BlogTO articles. In the posts, “Kill Feminists” urges readers to get a gun and open fire inside the women’s studies classroom.

“It’s horrible,” says Peggy Lee, a student in the Women’s and Gender Studies program. “The school definitely needs to do something about it. it really scares me and I don’t want to come to class under such circumstances.”

A similar comment was found on the same day, encouraging readers to “go into the nearest Sociology or Womens Studies classroom next week, and fire bullets into the Professor’s head and spray bullets all over the room until all the feminists are dead.”

Meanwhile, CUPE 3902 sent an e-mail to the members saying, they have the right to refuse to go to work.

“As your Union, it is our job to remind you that you have the legal right to refuse unsafe work. You do not have to enter a work situation in which you have reason the believe your safety or the safety of others may be at risk,” says the e-mail.

The school promises that they will take these threats very seriously and encourage students to report any suspicious activity to the police  at 911 or campus police St George: 416-978-2222, UTM: 905-569-4333, UTSC: 416-287-7333.
