Liberal ‘red wave’ rises in Atlantic Canada, carries into East York

At 10 p.m. the CBC announced that Liberals will form the next federal government.

With earliest results coming from Atlantic Canada, the CBC said that the so-called “red wave” had swept the Atlantic region, unseating such sitting Conservative cabinet ministers as Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea and Aboriginal and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt.

Early on election night, Liberal domination at the polls continued into East York.

As of 11 p.m. Liberal candidates were leading in all three East York ridings.

In Don Valley West Liberal candidate Rob Oliphant was leading over Conservative John Carmichael with more than 50 per cent of the vote.

NDP candidate Matthew Kellway in Beaches-East York at 11 p.m. was trailing Liberal opponent Nathaniel Erskine-Smith attracting nearly 50 per cent of the counted votes in that riding.

The apparent Liberal trend has challenged encumbent NDP candidate Craig Scott in Toronto-Danforth. Liberal candidate Julie Dabrusin was leading Scott 42 to 39 per cent, or by just under 350 votes.
