Fees to adopt black cats dropped in honour of Black Friday

Aniumal shelters waive regular $75 fee

Toronto Animal Service shelters are waiving fees for cats that are black or have black colouring in recognition of Black Friday. The event started on Nov. 20, and concludes on Nov. 29.

New owners can bring their black cats home without paying the regular $75 adoption fee. However, they will need to pay a $15 licence fee ($7.50 for seniors).

Black cats tend to have lower adoption rates than other cats, according to Mary Lou Leiher, program manager for Toronto Animal Services, but she isn’t sure why.

“It could be that people are superstitious, or it could just be that they don’t pop out as much … as the brighter coloured cats,” Leiher said. “They do tend to be really great cats though.”

Leiher expects the same results they received in previous years.

“It’s really successful,” Leiher said, adding they rehomed every single cat for the past two years.

All cats and kittens are sterilized, microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated and checked by a veterinarian prior to adoption.

Toronto Animal Service shelters are at T821 Progress Ave., 1300 Sheppard Ave. W., and 140 Princes Blvd. (Exhibition Place, Horse Palace).
