East York lane named after local luminary

Toronto and East York Community Council passes motion to designate "Thomas McClintock Lane"

The Nov. 10 meeting of the Toronto and East York Community Council saw many motions adopted — the majority around parking, housing and construction authorization or reform. Forty motions were amended, five were deferred and three were referred.

Among the motions adopted, one in particular focused on honoring a Torontonian. Council voted unanimously in favor of naming a public lane located north of Danforth Avenue, between Logan Avenue and Ferrier Avenue, as “Thomas McClintock Lane.”

Thomas McClintock was an immigrant from Ballymena, Northern Ireland, who moved to Canada in the early 1900s. McClintock was responsible for building many homes in East York, which contributed to the stabilization and improvement of housing and living conditions the area was in need for at the time.

Also among the motions adopted were TE12.12 and TE.12.13, which authorized properties at 357 and 359 Richmond Street (detached house from buildings now referred to as the Margaret Grimmon Houses), and at 339 Queen Street East (three-story building which contains the historic Home Furniture and Carpet Company Ltd.) to be included as part of the Toronto Heritage Register, under the Ontario Heritage Act. This allows City Council to monitor alterations to the site, enforce heritage property standards and maintenance, and refuse any demolition in the future, preserving and maintaining pieces of Toronto’s and East York’s history.
